AI for Education

AI for Education

The AI for Education working group brings together the five AI Institutes focused on education (iSAT, AI-ALOE, EngageAI, AI4ExceptionalEd, and INVITE) to (1) discuss shared goals and identify potential collaborative efforts, (2) share resources related to using AI and education, (3) organize and plan AI in Education events, such as conferences and workshops, and (4) discuss emerging research topics in AIED that are relevant to the 5 education institutes. This includes discussion of work both in foundational AI areas (machine learning, natural language processing, explainable AI) as well as in use-inspired, applied research including empirical research studies. How specifically AI can be used to promote learning is inherently an empirical question that all 5 institutes enthusiastically embrace. The group builds on two productive 1/2 day meetings held at SAIL 2023 and 2024 where each institute gave updates on research and identified specific points of collaboration, such as with multi-modal learning analytics, LLM-based conversational learning tools, and outreach efforts. While identifying shared goals of the 5 institutes is a top priority, the working group also recognizes the need for complementary efforts, such as in the target audiences (e.g., K-12, adults, formal/informal, and special education) and in underlying technologies (e.g., online learning, game-based environments, intelligent tutoring systems).
