AI and Instructional Design Outreach Workshop Held Nov. 15

On November 15, the AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education (AI-ALOE) held its AI and Instructional Design Outreach Workshop, exploring how to leverage instructional design to transform AI in education. There were 88 attendees, including instructional designers from the US and abroad.

During the three–hour Zoom workshop, the Institute’s project teams introduced the suite of AI-ALOE’s technologies and detailed their applications in teaching and learning. The agenda included these topics covered by AI-ALOE team members:

  • Welcome and Overview
    – Ashok Goel, PI and Executive Director

  • Design-Based Implementation Research (DBIR)
    – Chris Dede, Co-PI and Associate Director of Research

  • Virtual Teaching Assistant: Jill Watson
    – Sandeep Kakar, Faculty Researcher, Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • AI and Social Learning: SAMI
    – Travis Taylor, Research Scientist, Design Intelligence Lab, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • AI and Inquiry-Based Learning: VERA
    – John Kos, Graduate Student Researcher, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • AI and Personalized Feedback: SMART
    – Jinho Kim, Graduate Student Researcher, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • Intelligent Tutoring System: Apprentice Tutors
    – Glen Smith, Graduate Student Researcher, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • Intelligent Text: iTELL
    – Wesley Morris, Graduate Student Researcher, Vanderbilt University

  • Intelligent Video-Based Skill Learning: IVY
    – Rahul Dass, Research Scientist, Design Intelligence Lab, Georgia Institute of Technology

The workshop also had two breakout sessions, where attendees participated in a discussion focused on their specific technology of interest. The facilitated discussions answered these questions designed to foster targeted exploration of each AI technology’s educational applications:

  • What specific scenarios in teaching and learning would benefit the most from this AI technology?

  • Can you brainstorm 1-2 learning activities that could effectively integrate this technology into teaching and learning?

  • What data or metrics would you find valuable to measure the effectiveness of this AI technology in teaching and learning?

  • What are potential challenges instructors might face when integrating this tool? How could these challenges be addressed?

  • Are you aware of any AI technologies similar to the AI-ALOE technology being discussed?

  • If there is one feature that you would like to see added to the AI-ALOE technology being discussed, what would it be?
